Annual Series 1 Trip

Event date:
Friday, 8 March, 2019 - 08:00 to Sunday, 10 March, 2019 - 15:00

Who: anyone driving, or a passenger in, a pre 1958 Series One Land-Rover

The 2019 edition of the annual Series One rally will be based at the Carterton Holiday Park. The park provides accommodation options including tourist flats, cabins and tent sites, in a very private and peaceful setting, yet only 800m from Carterton’s shops and restaurants.

The draft agenda for the weekend is:
Friday
Arrive at the holiday park in time for a BBQ dinner (there are two gas BBQs available)

Saturday
Explore the Carterton area including:
 Explore a central Wairarapa farm with stunning views of the Ruamahanga River valley
 Explore tracks on a farm nestled in the foothills of the Tararua Ranges
o Climb though regenerating native forest to reach hill top views across the Wairarapa plains
o Visit the site where a Series One featured in an iconic TV series (so long as it isn’t too windy)
 Visit the Waiohine Gorge and its spectacular swing bridge
 Drive up Mt Dick for glorious late afternoon views stretching from Mt Bruce to Lake Ferry

Sunday
Explore the Eastern Wairarapa area including:
 Explore tracks on an Tinui hill country farm
 Use backcountry / paper roads to visit Mataikona and Castlepoint beaches
o Take a short walk to the Castlepoint Lighthouse
o Note: there will be no driving on the actual beaches
 Drive through the iconic Castlepoint Station to Otohome

Monday
An optional (depending on what time people need to leave to head home) morning tour of isolated roads/routes in the Masterton area:
 See a different view of the Wairarapa plains
 Discover some of the Scandinavian history involved in the clearance of the “70 mile Bush”

If you want to come, but don’t have a road-legal Series One, jump in with a mate who is coming, or let Paul know and he’ll find you a seat with someone else.

Notes
Accommodation
We don’t have exclusive use of the holiday park, so the sooner you book your accommodation the better.

Book online or phone +64 6 379 8267.

There is plenty of parking available at the holiday park, so if you want to trailer your Series One to Carterton that won’t be a problem

Terrain
Some of the tracks we will be going on will definitely need low range, however all tracks will be suitable for even the shiniest of Series Ones

Catering (The plan for food) is:
Friday: BBQ dinner at the holiday park (bring your own food and drink)

Saturday: Bring a picnic lunch (we’ll be eating at an old hunting hut in the bush). Dinner will be at a pub / restaurant in Carterton

Sunday: Bring a picnic lunch or buy lunch at the Castlepoint store. Dinner will be at a pub / restaurant in Carterton

Monday: You’ll be heading home by lunchtime

Southerners
Carterton is only 50 miles from the Wellington ferry terminal, so this will be your best chance to participate in one of our annual rallies without having to drive too far north. There were 7 North
Island based Series Ones on our 2016 rally (which got as far south as Hamner Springs), and then another 7 North Island based Series Ones drove down to Methven for the 70th rally. Hopefully you can match (or better) that number for this rally!

Northerners
Unfortunately it will be a long trip down for you (Carterton is 380 miles from Auckland), however don’t forget that the Wellington based vehicles that attended our 2017 rally drove 400 miles to get
to Rotorua (because we went via the Ureweras). Once you reach Taupo I’d recommend taking SH5 to Napier - this will only add an extra 15 miles to the trip and the roads are much quieter.
